We chat with none other than Vic Sanusi, journalist and co-host of the award-winning Black Gals Livin’ podcast! Hilarious, witty and utterly inspiring, Vic talks us through her day-to-day, how her craft makes her feel and not letting outside noise get in the way of her goals.
1. How are you (really)?
I’m great! I feel really optimistic for 2022!
2. What is a typical day in the life of Vic Sanusi?
A typical day is hella basic, I work a 9-5 then I go to the gym perhaps twice a week during my lunch break. Since lockdown, I pick a popular show that everyone and their nan have watched and I give it a chance, this time around I’m watching Grey’s Anatomy after work.
3. How does writing make you feel?
Crazy you asked that because I just sent an article pitch after a few months of not properly writing and genuinely I think it’s my passion. Writing on topics I feel excited about makes me so animated – I really love this feeling.
4. Summarise Black Gals Livin’ in three words
Two friends talking (lol)!
Or,
honest, funny and relaxing.
5. As well as popular culture, Black Gals Livin’ heavily centres around mental health, which is a paradox to how open it has been discussed in the Black community. What made you and Jas go down this route?
Jas is my sis and when it comes to mental health, she’s someone I can speak to about my struggles so when we spoke about creating a show, we thought about what topics could we talk about naturally, and we just thought we might as well bring our texts to life – so we went with speaking on mental health.
6. Francesca and I are amazingly close and love the dynamic between you and Jas. What is it like working with your good friend?
Thanks so much! Happy you get to work with your friend as well – it’s fab. Working with Jasmine is easy because she’s easy to talk to, she’s honest and very diligent.
7. Um, why are you so hilarious?
I honestly don’t know lol! You know what I realised over the Christmas period that my parents are actually funny too so maybe it’s how I’m raised, I really don’t know.
8. Despite the pandemic, 2021 seemed like an incredible year for you. What has been one of your highlights?
We did a live show for the pod – that honestly was the best thing of 2021! It was insane, I felt so emotional that people paid money to see us and the fact the same people came! Just meeting the people IRL who listen and support us really made Jas and I feel extremely moved and loved.
9. What are you not holding back in 2022? (Can be related to anything)
I am achieving everything I want to! I have to stop thinking about how others see me.
10. How do you switch off and relax?
I watch Grey’s Anatomy or I go to the gym.
11. What is something that you, as a girl, gets and need to put the girls, who don’t get it, on?
I’ve recently become a perfume lover, the girls have been telling me for years but I wasn’t listening. The girls need to smell Givenchy L’Interdit Rouge or Intense Cafe by Montale.
12. Finally, what are you looking forward to doing after this?
I’m excited to have Vapiano soon! I haven’t been there in about three years!
