Being black in the workplace

Being black in the workplace

Being black is feeling worried your name comes across as ethnic

Being black is making sure your hair is ‘appropriate’ for interview

Being black is being relieved your name doesn’t sound eccentric

Being black is second-guessing because your skin is still a darker hue

x

Being black is getting the job by not being the real you

Being black is having to show absolute devotion

Being black is switching on ‘work Dami’ on cue

Being black is fighting to get that promotion

x

Being black is being the only one that looks like you

Being black is mistaking you for another brown face

Being black is your excitement when a new sister comes through

Being black is you guys talking whilst others stare in the workplace

x

Being black is finding out you got the job based on a quota

Being black is finding out your white work mate is being paid more

Being black is getting the brunt side of the team rota

Being black is being overworked more and more and more

x

Being black is getting used to hearing comments about your food

Being black is always having to answer questions about your hair

Being black is accepting you’ll always be the one they try to exclude

Being black is knowing no matter how much you try, they’ll never treat you fair
