UK Black Pride will be celebrating their 15th birthday celebration this Sunday. They’ll be hosting a virtual event, with live stream performances, DJs and speakers.
The theme for this years celebrations is ‘home’. The reality is for a lot of LGBTQ POC acceptance is something we are unable to access through our families, friends or local communities. This isolation has been highlighted by circumstances like COVID-19, as we’re unable to be amongst one another; whether that be at clubs, festivals, parties or even dates set up on Tinder or HER. This virtual event allows us to show solidarity amongst ourselves; even if we can’t be together, we can be united. At UK Black Pride you’ll always find someone who understands where you’ve come from, where you are and where you’re going. A space where you are “seen, loved and valued“.
UK Black Pride started 15 years ago after Lady Phyll and a collective of Black lesbians travelled to Southend-on Sea in 2005. From then on the event has been growing annually, becoming Europe’s largest celebration for LGBTQ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Latinx descent. Everyone is welcome!
If you want to party, turn up with live sessions from reown DJs and performance artists within the community. Or if you want to learn about the history, enter another room where talks will be held with key figures within the community.
Pride 2020 was cancelled and Carnival too, so you know where I’ll be this Sunday. Grab a drink, get dressed up and see you there, sis!
