Mile End Climbing Wall: Taster session

Feeling dare devilish? Want to try something new? Then why not give top-roped climbing and bouldering a go at Mile End Climbing Wall!

The rock climbing gym offers taster sessions for absolute beginners. You will learn the basics of top-rope climbing (whilst strapped into a harness) and then have a go at bouldering (without ropes or a harness). But don’t worry, there’s spongy crash matting below so you’re in safe hands!

What you will need

Sessions are 1.5 hours long. Climbing shoes are provided and included in the price (£20 per person). Make sure you’re in your gym gear, water bottles are recommended (you’ll build up a sweat) and you’ll need £1 to store your valuables in a locker.

Tips

On arrival your instructor will strap you in for top-rope climbing and will help you out if you get stuck. They’re patient, friendly and know their way around the walls. Tip: It’s all in the foot placement.

You will quickly learn to take risks and be bold when moving up the wall. When you’re not climbing you must pull the ropes of other climbers in your group so they stay taut. It’s truly an immersive experience!

When you move onto bouldering, it’s a good idea to use the chalk provided to ensure you have a good amount of grip! This is your chance to practice what you’ve learnt on the ropes and hone your technique. You will see experts in bouldering climbing walls at a 45-degree angle. But baby steps first!

Further options

As tempting as it is, when your session ends you have to stop climbing. However you can develop your skills further by signing up to a roped climbing for beginners course or an introduction to bouldering course. If the structure of a taster session doesn’t appeal to you, you can go for their turn up and try option (see website for details).

Rock climbing is a great activity that will leave you with a strong feeling of achievement and wanting more!
